Today one of the arms was jamming up, so I needed to pull the machine apart to sort it out, and that seemed like an ideal time to check out the outer sleeve as well. I feel like we maybe need to come up with a better system for sharing CAD files. Maybe another page?

Might be valuable to put it in the repo instead of on the site or on the forum, so it could be in markdown, formatted similar to the current not shop, could be added to by anyone (just needing approval for changes to go live), and would be easy to just re-route the current nav on the site to redirect there instead so all old links just work and nothing is truly deprecated other than the old page file itself. Would also be a good way for creators to be able to update their own files if they redesign them. Onshape files could just be links in the markdown, but people that don’t use OnShape could just upload the files themselves in a designated directory and link to the relevant file(s)/folder in that markdown file.

There is sharing cad files, and there is sharing links to onshape where the cad
can have config options

for example, the belt end and corners can be configured for any size pin and to
be different lengths.

I was thinking that the default pin size and length could be exported to a stl
and directly linked on the not shop page and then a link to the onshape doc with
a note that if you need different versions, go there, set the config variables
and export the parts

may need to have a video about that.

Ideally I’d like to be able to share them through abundance 😀

I think I can see where you’re coming from, I haven’t had a chance to look into that and just lack a lot of context. I’ll admit, I’m likely not liable to use it because I have Aspire workflows already and am enjoying the bells and whistles (and just got done teaching it to my dad, lol). Would be nice if users didn’t have to learn/install/use an additional tool just to access files, especially if they aren’t already using OnShape and have to now add two new bits of software to their stack instead of just the one (Onshape).

Ideally we could share things like this:

That way folks could customize them a little bit without needing to log in or learn any new software.

In that example you can adjust the length of the pipe and export it as a .stl file without needing to learn much

that will have exactly the same issues as sharing onshape docs (the designs are
live elsewhere, not static files)

onshape can do the same thing with config options.

it lets you set the board size , bolt size, thickness of belt end (and probably
way too many other options) and then export the stl without logging in or
needing to learn how to do any design work in onshape.

another example would be the spindle holder I’m in the middle of designing
(based on router-b-gone)

it lets you set the thickness of some parts and select the spindle type from a
dropdown and adjusts everything to fit
