Is there more information on anyone whom “clipped the ears” as you mentioned?
I did some searching and couldn’t find it.
as far as I know, nobody has done it yet. I broke one of my verticals around a
lead screw but have not yet cut off the top ears or removed the other one.

I’m not sure how to reply to a particular comment…
I’m talking about the proposed roller balls above:
expect any balls like this will soon pickup dust and chips like an old mouse ball and clog frequently. And also the issues that you’d face when they drop into cut grooves.
Slippery Tape is a good idea, I was thinking a sacrificial piece of Perspex? I have a 3mm sheet under my Makita plunge router that seems to serve that purpose.
There are a couple of ways to reply to a comment. You can hit the reply button at the bottom of each post which will reply to the user and will show a link to the users’ post in the upper right of your reply post. It won’t be visually obvious which post you are replying to, but you can follow the link. This is apparently what you did in writing your last post.
The other way is to select part or all of the user’s post which should pop up a context menu that has the option to quote that text. This is what I did to create this post.
