Dangerous! Snapped chain!

if you marked the chain at a position that would be 1651 for the last link, than
the distance to the next link is 1644.65.

If you change the value in the settings from 1651 to 1644.65, put the sprockets
at 12 o’clock, and manually set the chain length, you can then use the next link
in the chain and the machine will be where it thinks it is.

In my case, I was being lazy and not actually feeding out the chain (as the
machine was already built and the sled hanging), I just measured and marked the
link at what I thought was the right distance, 1651mm from the bit. But I
couldn’t get the machine to go to the center as it was supposed to and finally
realized my mistake. rather than marking a different link, I just changed the
setting, and set the chain length.

It does work, experiment a bit and you will see.

Thanks for the details. I think i got it now.

I just ran some stiff baling wire through the last link, bent over the ends, and reinstalled the cotter pins. Been going for about a year this way and no problems.
