Working through the calibration process and would like to keep the sled on my vertical frame while I retract and extend the cables.
Is it ok to hang the sled from the step motor column like in this picture? Don’t want o accidentally misalign or break something.
Yup! That’s designed to be a handle so feel free to lift there 
better to drill a hole through the sled and hang it from that.
or hang it from one of the tall plastic braces.

I’ve snapped off one of those columns, so I don’t trust them 
it works just fine with it missing, but I still don’t trust them.

How did it snap?
I think it’s actually better to lift from the column because the the lead screws and linear rods aren’t really designed to support the weight of the router in the lateral direction. The handles hold the weight of the router so the seld only has to support it’s own weight.
I hadn’t yet attached the top bracket to it, and setting it on it’s side,
pulled the screw heads through the bottom bracket (thus my suggestion that when
you have to re-do the injection molds, make those parts thicker)
