Newbie questions

Hi everyone. I just finished building my router and I’m about to get started building the frame. A few questions:

  1. I had an idea of installing magnets to the sled to hold the router’s wrench. Then I remembered that the belts are driven by a magnetic encorder. Has anyone tried this or is it a terrible idea?
  2. I want to mount the anchors to my garage floor and do a horizontal frame. Are there any concerns with vertical placement of the mount points. For example, my garage has a 1 foot of cement and then studs above it. I’d like to mount the anchor to the studs. Also there is a place where I need to mount the maslow to the floor. When considering bolt lengths, do I have to account for the thickness of my spoilboard and workpiece so I’m somewhat level?
  3. The calibration instructions said that if I use the same frame that I don’t need to run the calibration process again. Does that mean I need to mark the center point of the frame on my garage floor so that all pieces are relative to that spot? I won’t permanently attach my spoiler board to my floor.
  4. The spools on my maslow have a lot of play up and down. The bottom mounting plate fit tightly so I was wondering if this is intentional?

Thanks everyone for your help and guidance. I’m really excited to get started.

All the way down at the sled you should be fine. I haven’t tested it, but I wouldn’t expect it to have much impact

Yes, but there are settings you can tweak for that. In the configuration file you will see that each anchor point has an XY position which will be calculated by the calibration process and also a zaxis offset which you can enter if your anchor points are not all in the same plane. The number there is the distance between the anchor point and the corresponding arm when the z-axis is all the way down. It’s a little confusing to describe, but just know that there is a setting for that and we an help you find the right numbers once you have things built.

No, you would only need to do that if you wanted to be able to lift up your spoil board and then be able to put it back in the same spot. I just throw mine down on the floor wherever and then scoot my machine to where I want to cut using the jog arrows and press “define home”

Yes, this is normal

Great questions!

Wow. Thanks so much for the quick reply! I can’t wait to get started

The key thing is that you don’t want the belts to pull up on the sled, so if you
want your anchors 1’ above your garage floor, you may want to build a low
platform to cut on.

I would paint a couple lines on the garage floor that mark the left and bottom
of the spoilboard so that you can get it ‘close’ each time. unless you are
cutting the entire sheet, you can adjust the sheet and/or home position for each
cut.
