Position error that is software related

Hey, I have made numerous cuts over the last couple of months without issue. And then tonight, the dreaded position error came back over and over again in the same spot. I was able to finally make the cut by starting the router in a position other than my home position. After finishing, I adjusted the height up and turned the router off. Set the router back to the same home position, pressed run and it failed again at the exact same spot…

I am running older firmware from the summer will try updating soon.

I have the hot glue on my plugs.

from the extend/retract cycles, I wonder if your magnets are loose.

This looks like the encoder connection issue to me. This is cause by dust getting into the Ethernet ports and making the connection to the encoders unreliable. The quick fix is to blow them out with some computer duster and to seal them up with hot glue, the long term fix is to switch to the JST-XH connectors in the 4.1 update which handle the dust and vibrations of the router much better.

The connectors are sealed with hot glue. What is the procedure for removing the hot glue?

Why does it fail immediately when starting from the home position and crosses near the center of the 13’ x 13’ frame but is fine when it starts from a different position and doesn’t cross the center?

The center is

It gets the position error immediate when it gets close to center. The purple dot is at startup when the belts are pulled tight.

It failed 4 or 5 times at approximately the same position and happens within the first 10 seconds of running.

Isopropyl alcohol will release the glue without damaging any electronics. When you reglue make sure that the glue is only on the top so not to interfere with the electrical connection.

Just made this with my kids, easy peasy staying away from the center. The machine seems to be running fine. I’m pretty sure there is a math problem somewhere when you directly cross the center of the frame.

That is 100% possible. I’ve also seen it where the cables get pushed in a particular direction in a particular spot and will disconnect there every time.

@N8DGR8 have you ran this gcode before and dit it always fail? If so, would you be willing to share the .nc file, so I can see if it works on my machine?
First thing though would be to update the software, maybe this has been fixed already.

Great feedback! It sucks that it fails, but the good thing is that you can replicate it - pretty much a prerequisite for fixing a problem. Unfortunately, my Maslow isn’t working right now (waiting for the JST encoder board upgrade). Maybe someone else can test this G-code?
Oh and please try the latest software!

I will try to replicate the issue. What I need to do is to cut this file so that part of it is to the left of center and part of it is to the right of center?

It should fail just moving into position before any cutting happens.

It seems to fail at the approximate center of the frame. For example, it fails, I turn off power, retract belts, extend belts, apply tension, the Maslow does not move since it is exactly where it failed.

So to answer your question, move from the bottom left at a 45 degree angle to the top right. Just crossing the center from left to right is not enough. It has to be left to right and bottom to top all at once.

The cut succeeds if you manually move the Maslow up, then to the right to the approximate starting point and then start. It just drives around the center of the frame but never crosses the center.

I’m thinking about setting up a “X” pattern to cut with the center of the “X” at home and home at the center of the frame.

Just updated to the v0.87 firmware. Still have this issue. It doesn’t seem to be related to center of the frame. It is a diagional jog. Please see the really simple Z shape attached. Cutting diagonally seems to be ok. Jogging at 45 degrees fails ever time.
