Thoughts on clamping, spoilboards, etc

I expect to be working on some smallish projects (e.g., engraving a 1’ square sheet). This presents me with the problem of clamping the workpiece(s) in place, while not obstructing the sled’s motion. Here’s a partly-baked idea, for discussion, feedback, etc.

  • Create a spoilboard out of 1/2" OSB.
  • Drill a bazillion holes in it, on a fairly tight grid.
  • Use dowel pins in selected holes to establish positions.
  • Clamp using rectangular plates and triangular wedges.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to provide a flat surface for the sled. Any suggestions?

get some scrap wood the same thickness as your workpiece, screw those pieces to
the spoilboard to trap your workpiece and prevent it from moving.

make these ‘skirts’ around your workpiece at least 4" wide, and ideally 8"+
