Throwing my hat in the sled modification ring

One set here also please, David.

I just got the quote, it looks like including tax and shipping (post office flat rate envelopes, I’m assuming everyone is in the US) and paypal fees, we are right about $50 per set to get 10 sets.

I’m thinking $55 each for 8 sets, and then I’ll cover the rest of the cost to send a set to @pillageTHENburn at no cost to him.

I see offers to buy a set from

@Rancher
@mrfugu
@JDogHerman
@bar
@blurfl
@TomTheWhittler
@ihabfahmy

That leaves one set up for grabs.

going from 5 sets to 10 sets dropped the per-set price by ~$6. These are laser cut so it looks like the material cost is somewhere around $10/set and the rest is the laser cutting cost.If that’s the case I don’t know that it’s worth trying to have someone do it in aluminum to see if they would be strong enough.

Does that sound reasonable to everyone?

That sounds very good to me. Thank you for taking the initiative.

Add a moose to the list, we like shiny stainless here. It sounds heavy enough to dissuade the swamp rats, and the slush fund will extend to both precut versions. Might have to donate a Maslow to the high school to use the other one.

somehow I think that if you got him the motors, chains, sprockets, wires, and electronics, he would be able to figure some way to hold them in place :slight_smile:

ok, @mooselake gets the last set of this batch

We’ll see how this batch goes. If it the costs are in the ballpark that I’m expecting, I’ll look at doing additional batches or just setting up to take orders and sell them going forward.

Sounds okay to me.
Want to message each person with your paypal information so it is not posted publicly in a forum ?

No worries here. standing by for further instructions.

Absolutely, and thank you so much David.

@dlang Can I get in on the next batch? looks like my lurking is too slow this time

@dlang I too would like to get a set (on the next batch I suppose) I was a little late on the forums today… :frowning: I can paypal anytime using FF to avoid fees of course :slight_smile:

I’m in Ontario, Canada so I get the pleasure of paying more for
shipping …

I think I’m going to hold off until monday to order things, let’s see if there
are other lurkers who want to order and I should be able to increase the number
of parts.

I have never had anyone send me money via paypal before, I’ve only used it to
pay others. I need to figure out what’s involved.

by the way, I need to be very clear, I have not tried these yet. I am pretty sure they will work, but they may end up needing tweaking (careful filing to enlarge the holes or similar), and it’s even possible that we will find that full force bends something.

you are signing up for an experiment, not a final product.

anyone with good materials experience can double-check the strength.

Edit, I see we were typing at the same time…

Now that you’re past the minimum I suggest waiting a day or so to finalize the total order count. A fixed setup cost plus time and material is a common way to price small jobs.

Keep the price the same and use any leftovers to finance some inventory for slow forum checkers. That way you don’t get stuck paying for them. Remember us when it pays for your yacht :slight_smile:

I’m assuming this doesn’t include the base sled, for grins about what would that add to the price?

How thick is the stainless? You can lift cars with surprisingly thin pieces

it’s 3/16 thick by about 3/4" wide

I have no concerns about it’s strength under tension.

My concernis it’s strength under compression, and when pulled sideways.

especially if the joints have just a little slop in them and pulling sideways
rotates the bar just a little bit so now you are pulling partly against the
thickness of the piece instead of against the width.

With 477 posts in this topic it might be time to split some of the different designs into different topics.

Fusion360’s FEA could be a good way to look at potential bending for one of you CAD guys. 3/16 x 3/4 feels more than enough, but I took statics and dynamics with my good buddy Sly Drool before going to the electronics and software dark side. Today I just weld on more mild steel until it’s good enough

why use stainless? it is very very expensive compared to just plain old steel.
here is my local laser cutter http://www.laserdynamicsinc.com/ they do small orders and ship ups anywhere.
this company is different than the individual that does mail order laser work I’ve mentioned before.

they do mail order. you get the best pricing when you have relatively high volumes. the per unit cost of getting one done vs getting 50 done is about 10x. for example if part cost $10 to cut one piece, it would cost around $1 to cut 50 of them.

if you really want the best price buy an entire 4x8 sheet of metal and have metal company deliver it to your laser company (most metal companies delivery for free or very cheap) and most laser companies mark up the material at least 10%

f you want to use stainless on the final product that is one thing but on an unproven design I’d be cautious. Wishing you the best, but also trying to save you $$$ lol.
