I just finished the first job I ever did on a Maslow that I think was either an M1 or M2 at our “maker space”. I felt the sled has a lot of friction. I was cutting out a 3/16" Masonite template. The sled was made out of construction grade plywood, so the bottom is not very smooth. Would I improve things by remaking the sled out of a birch ply, or would it be easy enough to simply wax the bottom of the sled to make it run more smoothly?

waxing the sled was very common, you should not need to remake it out of
expensive wood unless there is something very wrong with the existing sled.
just sand the bottom smooth and wax it.
