Had it calibrated in vertical - won't calibrate when horizontal

As the title states, I had multiple good calibrations in the vertical postion but after removing it from the wall and laying flat on the floor it will not calibrate. Updated firmware and index to 0.81 last night and after 2 attempts last night and 3 this morning I’m somewhat baffled. I changed spoil boards to ensure there is nothing for the machine to get stuck on while moving around. Config settings for size are exactly as they were when it was vertical. I literally just unscrewed it from the wall and layed it down flat.

I know, we were discussing lowering that threshold and at what point it would affect accuracy. I think the machine at Altspace is running with .45 fitness

I actually changed the threshold for the error to 0.45 a couple of versions back, but you would have to replace your maslow.yaml file to get that change.

The easiest fix is to just go in there and change this setting and you should be good to go:

The real question is why is why are you getting a lower fitness in horizontal than vertical and I’m not sure what the answer is there!

That’s what is boggling me aswell. I believe it calibrated at 0.73 vertical. I’ll change the threshold and run some test cuts and see what shakes out.

Well, there would be a lower coefficient of friction on the machine in a vertical configuration (actually a lower vertical force), which would allow the sled to position itself better, so that could explain it. Have you tried waxing the bottom of the sled?

@bar, should you re-calibrate if you change the orientation from vertical to horizontal? There isn’t a change in frame dimension. Is there something else that calibration does that would affect the usage.

I could see getting different results during calibration, though. Not just a friction component but the loss of gravity assist during the individual pull measures.

I would expect the increased friction to cause the motors to hit the “the belt is tight” threshold sooner than they would without it during any given retraction. It’d be an absurdly tiny time difference on human scales, but maybe it’s enough to mess up the measurements if the machine thinks it’s pulling itself to coordinate A, but really it’s just slightly off because it stopped pulling a split second too soon.

remember that a fitness of 1 is saying that you know the anchor positions to
within 1mm and a fitness of .5 is saying that you know the anchor positions to
within 2mm

we are talking pretty small differences.

belt stretch would also be a bit different between the two modes

I figured it might not be enough to matter, but I never feel safe assuming that. I at least like to acknowledge that kind of thing even if it shouldnt rise to the level of causing an issue. I’ve been surprised with stuff ending up mattering I thought wouldn’t breach thresholds too many times.

I have noticed on my horizontal machine that it seems like the first 2 belts to tighten don’t necessarily cause the sled to form a straight line, like the sled seems ‘sag’ a little bit, because in order to pull it completely tight it would require a huge amount of force (ie, if the belt angle is only 1 degree, trying to get that to 0 degrees requires a lot of force, a force diagram shows a pulll of 1500 (calibration force) results in only 26.18 units of force in the vertical direction, so making that line straight is quite difficult).

What I don’t know is how many times the unit pulls on opposite corners to try to get the sled in the 100% accurate spot. I would imagine that tightening opposite corners a few times would yield better results, and maybe that is what is happening, I am not enough of a code jockey to go and look unfortunately. Anyone know for sure, or does what I typed make no sense?
