Legs for Kitchen Table

How long is the table? I’m looking at building one that is 3m long (10 foot).
thought about laminating 2x4s together for the top…

I just ment, go get it from the lumber yard, and flatten it with a router-slab-flattening-jig

Just tried to upload the files, but it looks like some settings need to be changed before I can.

I can just post the drawings, files, and pictures on a new thread for now if that would be helpful.

Thank Bar!

Where are you seeing that issue?

Is it from here: http://maslowcommunitygarden.org/addaproject.html

I was following this:

When trying to click “upload files” I get the message.

Should I go through the “Add a project” portal you posted instead?

I think I see the confusion. There was a repository called “community garden” which was our original community garden. The website is the new version. I disabled uploads on the old version when the new one was created, but I see how having it around still is confusing so I’ve deleted it. All the content there has been moved to the website.

The “Add a project” portal is the way to go!

Hi all,

I’ve been working on this project on-and-off for a couple weeks, and just took a few pictures to share of the progress.

Pardon the mess…

Starting to look like a table! The last things to do are finish banding the legs, assembling the legs, and mounting the legs. A few coats of sealer, and we’ll call it a day.

Thanks for all of your encouragement!

Small update:

Well actually it was a lot of work to get to this point from the last update, but the progress looks small…

I have finished cutting and assembling the additional layers of the legs, and am now getting close to mounting them to the table itself!

Have a great week!

Looking great. Not to be nit picky but are the offsets between the different layers intentional or variations in accuracy on your machine? Either way it looks nice.

@Jayster - There’s a few places where the cuts would leave too thin of a slice of material and the material might snap off, so I cheated the splines a bit in those areas to give the cut a better chance of success. If you look at the original render at the top of the post, you’ll see that the legs turned out nearly identical to the design +/- 1/10."

There’s also a few places where the banding hasn’t been totally trimmed, so that may look confusing until the legs are fully installed.

Thanks!

Final Project Update:

The table is complete!

The last step was to counter-sink the leg ends into the underside of the table for stability.
I’ll be experimenting with some different finishes to protect the wood such as wipe-on poly, or boiled linseed oil, but I’m intending to keep it as similar to the existing color as possible.

I may post another picture once I’ve installed it in my apartment’s kitchen.

Thanks for all of the kind words!

Excellent job! I am fighting now with cutting out few parts for an opendesk table, so my respect to the hours of listening to the sound of router whistling into your ears! Have any numbers like hours of cnc time, and hours of labor by hand?

Thanks! It took an hour per layer per half leg, so that would be 12 hours of cut time total, not to mention the 2 hours of failed cuts.

I estimated 100-125 hours on the project including cad, cam, and construction.

Also, if anyone has recommendations for a finish that keeps the wood its natural color, I’m definitely interested.

I’m thinking of a thin wipe-on poly right now with a furniture wax over it, but I don’t want to have it be tacky like wax often is.

If you are on the ECO route I can recomend linseed oil. It comes in different shades. It is a bit sticky a couple of days until it soaked in and dried but it is safe.

Edit: I’ve seen flaming wood for a burnt look and I know waxing wood. Is there a combination? As wax becomes liquid with heat and therefore more easily is absorbed some additional colour benefit might show up. I have no idea

Edit2: The answer for the copyright: “No words is more I can say!” is a quote that I believed to have invented and it looked so great at night and much less in the morning. Anyhow, if no one has said that before you need to reference me if you use it

Edit3: Why I was so stunned and invented (or repeated) a quote is because of the shadows and the organic look the not symmetric 2 part legs create. For my crazy the mind the finishing question is a key to enhance an incredible piece of Art.
