I was starting the calibration and lowering the axis but only one z stepper works. I confirmed this by switching the motors and only one side is driven

This is 100% the issue that we had with the first batch of boards, it looks like one snuck through the testing process. DM your address to @anna and we will get you a replacement in the mail today.
