Mounting on Deck?

Hi community!

I am in the process of purchasing my own Maslow M4, but have some challenges.

I have very limited space (apartment balcony 6.5mx3.5m), and I would like to be able to use the M4 periodically. Meaning I am aiming for a simple, foldable frame, which can be stored when not in use.

While trying to find a solution, I came up with a different solution, let me know if this can work:

Simple, removable fixation points into slits between deck boards (see image). This will allow me to use the M4 horizontally, while fixating the anchors using a removable mechanism, without harming the deck. This will also allow me to modify the “frame” size since I can fixate it anywhere I’d like.

Would love to hear your thoughts. Can this work or am I dreaming?

Thanks!

Or you could just back out the screws holding the deck and use those. I would go the deck screw route personally, as you know those won’t pull out, and the location would be stable minimizing recalibration runs, but inserting between the slits should work if you can make it strong enough and reporducible to avoid recalibrating.

I would go for a hybrid of the two ideas already proposed: locate your anchor points through the slits, but anchored to the joists supporting the floorboards. I would pull up a few floorboards to install threaded inserts into the joists, then reinstall the floorboards. This will ensure that your anchor points are always at the same place, so you don’t have to re-calibrate every time you set up.

Great thinking. I didn’t give enough thought to the calibration process. It would indeed be ideal to have a reproducible fixation points.
When working on small parts, can I have a respectively small anchors frame? for example, cutting a 2’x2’ board, what would be the minimal size anchor frame required?

Good catch. I think this might be a must. Thanks!

dlang has a calculator where you can see what the math says for a frame size as to what it can accurately cut. Note you can cut some in the red/white areas but it will likely be innacurate

Yes, you can absolutely use different sized frames. Check out this frame checker. It allows you to enter in the anchor points width and height and gives you the approximate cutting area. It is fairly self expanatory, take a few minutes and see if it makes sense.

Also, you would only need to calibrate once for each anchor point setup, all calibration data is stored in the maslow.yaml file, so you could easily switch back and forth just by changing the file out.

Great tool, all clear. Thanks!

Thanks!
