Sails and Spars Rack

As the sailing season has come to an end I needed to retrieve my 3 sets of sails and spars from the marina. Unfortunately, when I stored 2 sets the rack built for only one set broke so a new rack needed to be built and installed.

This was my first time working with lettering. I both cut the letters too deep, 5mm, and had trouble with voids in the sanded plywood. Several of the smaller bits - inside of 8, S, and d - for example broke off.

A sharp chisel removed the tabs used to hold the pieces in place. I didn’t worry about sanding them.

Because in the next step I used a round over bit on all edges, but the straight edge that would be against the wall.

I painted the sail numbers and boat names with acrylic paint that was on hand. The blue was both gloopy and had a helper.

A random orbit sander with 220 cleaned up the faces and any wayward paint.

Each rack was glued and screwed to the edge of a 2x4 that would be screwed to wall studs in the garage.

These are spectacular! I love the mix of cutting and engraving text

Thank you. I was thinking that when I get a z print working it might be good to try again with a v bit for the lettering if I can find a good way to generate center lines to trace.
