Here are pictures of my setup.
There is a twist in the top bar, but I’ve corrected for it somewhat. Not sure if that could be the culprit.
This is still my main focus right now, I’m just fixing other issues along the way as I come across them like adding a warning if you try to start calibration before connecting to the machine…not that I would make a silly mistake like that (Fixed in PR #705)
I made some tweaks to the process that I feel good about, but now I’m running into an issue where when using the top feeding setup I’m not centered vertically (or even close) when using the “move to center” button.
Have either of you experienced that @george or @BillH?
I am going to continue investigating and I will keep you posted
Hadn’t noticed vertical off center but doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. I’m out of the shop for at least 24hrs probably. Sorry I won’t be able to update.
I haven’t noticed it either, but I’ll go check.
I think I might be a little off center as well.
I tried swapping the left and right motors, but still the same results. @bar Are you able to reproduce the issue on your end?
I’m about to start trying to replicate it again, I will keep you posted
Ok, I was just being tired and silly last night. My being off center issue was caused by me putting 140mm in for the vertical motor offset instead of the rotation radius
Onward and hopefully upwards
I’m still getting straight calibration cuts:
So I don’t think our issue is top feed vs bottom feed.
I’m trying to think of what else we can test. I’m noticing some charring in this photo along the path of the cut which shouldn’t be there.
That can happen when either the machine is moving REALLY slowly or when the bit is really dull. Does the machine move REALLY slowly when cutting the test pattern for some reason? What kind of router bit is making the marks?
Cut 3 looks really odd. How smoothly do the chains rotate around the ring? You mentioned something about the textured paint and it almost looks like something is binding and then letting go.
Can I ask a favour? If your sled is in the middle and you just pull it away from the sheet with 2 fingers at both chains near the ring, does top or bottom tilt more towards the sheet?
I would say bottom, but have to double check next time I’m in the shop. I can’t see how it would possibly be top.
@bar It is a 1/4" HSS Up Cut Spiral that I purchased from Rockler for this build.
@Gero The sled has a slight tilt towards the sheet from the bottom.
Thanks for the response! I’m late for triangular, so others have more experience.
I hope you don’t mind that I comment anyway. (i’m known for that and proven to be wrong.)
I did notice the long bricks. They have holes, yes, still I’d like to know the weight of each.
With the L-brakets we had a fixed ‘chain-mounting-point’ and it was easy to balance the sled for all heights, to hang it vertical, or slightly ‘top-to sheet’ angle.
My guess is that you want the same with your ring kit with the sled at the middle of the sheet.
I don’t have the answer for: raise the ring in height or lower the weight of the bricks.
With triangular, the CG-Z (centre of gravity on Z-axis) shifts (from the little i’ve seen myself) depending on how heigh or low on the sheet. Please observe your sled from the side, moving left and right, once for top and bottom and kindly report back if you see something in the line of ‘sled at top/ top friction’ and vice versa or opposite.
All,
I noticed in these pictures there is no Bungie Cord over the top of the router. People have reported problems getting depth when no Bungie Cord was attached over the top of the router to the handles to assist in pulling the router down to the surface.
Thank you
Fixed my issue. @bar was right, the bit I had was to dull. Went to Home Depot and bought another bit and it’s cutting perfectly now. @george You may want to try switching out the bits.
Thanks to everyone and especially @bar!!
Wow, nice find. This was a fun one to follow.
It could be, but the bit is brand new. It has cut probably less than 10 linear feet. Certainly not 20. And I’m not seeing any burn marks.
