Github for user mods / 3d prints

I think this might have been discussed in other threads, but was pondering this as I have a new clamp design / simplified version of the liner rail conversion (but using the original linear bearings) I need to upload and share.

I realise I am quite skewed as i’m very into the hardware hacking side of Maslow stuff and I like version control…

For user 3d prints / mods - were we considering a separate github repository and moving everything to there? I feel like it was an option discussed, but I don’t think there was a conclusion?

In my head, I’m imagining a repository, and i can’t create a pull request if I create a mod or useful item and I want to share it with the community and have it remain. If someone doesn’t want to use github they could still stick an stl in a thread and say they’re happy for it to be added by an admin.

I’m not quite sure what structure you’d use, whether you’d have it top level split by topic (frame / accessories / Maslow unit / etc) or by username. Or whether you’d split at top level by username, or not bother with username beyond some attribution somewhere.

From my perspective:

Pros:

  • Everything in one place.
  • Version control and history (for me personally that’s why i’ve already used it for some of my stuff).
  • Visibility (as in, it’s normal to be able to point to your contributions to FOSS projects by pointing to your personal github).
  • Some curation is possible, and also delegation of any reviewing needed.

Cons:

  • What do you do with Onshape etc links rather than actual stls (possibly a link in the readme and an instantiation being committed).
  • Requires review for PRs, even if it’s cursory.
  • Would it be a barrier to people sharing things?

I’m sure there are other pros and cons to it?

I think we may have a place for that. You could put it here. Maybe check with @bar Anything is better than nothing. So make a text document for links or upload your file here:

This would be the place for variations on Maslow parts. There are also folders already created for accessories and other things.

Ah, you are two steps ahead!

Before I start doing PRs - @bar is this where we want stuff to start being uploaded to?

I do slightly question calling it CAD if it’s purely for user contributions (correct me if i’m mis-remembering but the official 3D files are in their own separate repository), but i’m also not sure what i’d call it

Yes please! Things used to be spread across a lot of repos, but we’re trying to move to having everything in one place.

I think it’s still CAD files

We’re going to move the official CAD files over here too soon, but they’ll get their own folder to make it clear what is what

Thanks, have done a PR for the Turtle Clamp - good excuse to try github desktop on Windows!
