Does anyone have any recommendations for making this shelving unit. I made it in SketchUp with the Free Trial (sad to see it cost $100 now.) I want to make this shelving unit with cutouts/tabs/slots for press-fitting.
I have been having good luck with Krabzcam when I’m able to generate a SVG.
So i kept playing around with SketchUp and ChatGPT, wishing there was an easy button. I learned to make each piece of wood a “component” in SketchUp. This allowed me to edit them easier. I made: 2 Sides, 5 Shelfs, 3 Dividers. From the model above, I then moved the boards away from the actual build and started to make 4" slats in the wood to join the outside edges. The depth is 19" (4" - 4" - 4" - 4" - 3".) Four inch side towards the front and 3" towards the back. Then I worked on the center to find the middle of the wood and have the “main box frame” fit together with friction (9.5" cuts.) I found an extension to turn what I made into SVG called OpenCutList.
Now, I think I have plans to make a shelf. I hope the tolerance is ok.
Its not really fully ready yet, but I’m working on a free and open CAD/CAM program called Abundance which should be able to do things like this easily.
It can handle things like notches and tabs, laying out the parts automatically, and soon generating the gcode to be cut.
It’s still in its early stages, but you can check out more info here:
