I have read a bit about people having issue with the original shield (with L298P drivers), and now East Bay and Metal Maslow are supplying the new shield (with higher power TLE5206 drivers). I bought my kit from Maker Made, who supplies only the older shield.
Is this a problem most people will run into, or fairly rare?
I have been wondering the same thing. I would like to upgrade when I can but haven’t taken the plunge yet. Thanks for asking!
The tle5206 has higher current capability and may perform better when the sled is high up on the board (where the motors are pulling the hardest). If you find you get a “sled not keeping up” error when cutting up in that area, then the tle5206 board may help.

Thanks for the info. I am planning to start with a 12’ top bar, set ~30” above top of work surface, so I hope this will help reduce that also.
