I dusted off the OG Maslow to cut some bike racks for some friends.
I was a little worried because the file cuts to every edge, but the Maslow looks like it did an amazing job.
To get an idea of the procedure:
-
They sent me the svg file
-
I imported it into inventables
-
I set the depth for all the cuts and added tabs so it wouldn’t fall in on itself as it was being cut out.
-
The software created 171,429 lines of code to make the cuts.
-
I copied and pasted the code into the cnc contolling software
-
We put the 8’x4’ plywood sheet on the rack. I surrounded it as best I could so the sled would be supported at the edges.
-
I pressed go and the machine started cutting. The software said it was supposed to take 22 hours. (The file was NOT optimized for CNC and I could have probably spent an hour up front cleaning it up to save 4 or 5 hours of cutting)
-
I installed a camera to monitor it while I wasn’t in the room. (I think I had three or four error messages that made me reboot during the 171,429 lines of G-code that I keep starting and stopping. But once I remembered how to get through that, it worked amazingly well.)
-
I kept stopping it when I wasn’t close by and starting it back up where it left off when I could monitor it.
We started Saturday and it was done today.
Dust collection was absolutely horrible, though.
I think I’m going to keep the OG Maslow for big projects until it jumps a sprocket and build a small frame, portable , horizontal frame for the Maslow 4 if I ever get it working.
