Playground rules for the community garden

@maslonian, very well said

It’s not your comments that gave me that feeling. It’s just that i’ve never had a discussion like this about this over here. It’s a very American topic in my view.

@ScrumdyBum none of this is aimed at you or your project, it just happened to be what started it.

Anyways, the mailman left a note that i wasn’t home to accept a delivery, gonna pick it up tomorrow and after that i hope it’s my maslow and i’m gonna be too busy to be bothered by this tread.

Pandora’s box cannot be closed once opened. For good or bad, this forum will have to deal with whether or not certain things are appropriate. When it comes to appropriate, it is certain that its definition will be as varied as the number of people expressing themselves.

I also 3D print from time to time. I don’t care to look at anything on thingiverse that does not interest me. If I see something I like, I make it. If I see something I don’t like, I move on to the next. I am not appalled that it exists, I just use the site for what it is intended for - making things.

We, or Bar, or someone, has to decide what and how the Community Garden is used. Start limiting content, (this will polarize people and they will stop coming) or allow anything (this will also polarize people and they will stop coming).

If it were up to me (my two cents) Organize things in categories and let visitors decide what they choose to look at, contribute to, or be offended by. Sorry, run-on sentences are my thing.

My experience is almost completely opposite. At 12 years old, my father began teaching me the use, care and operation of firearms, namely a .22 Mossberg which I still own today. Being proficient with a firearm doesn’t happen by accident, you train and practice.

At 17 I joined the U.S. Army and was taught once again, the proper care and use of several types of automatic weapons (the M-16 was Eugene Stoner’s second finest achievement if you ask me) I am trained and proficient in the use of many fully and semi-automatic weapons. I don’t currently own any AR’s but am not ruling them out to add to my collection. We are a society surrounded by the things that created this country and something changed. Too much information, too little nurturing of our future, too much apathy. Take your pick.

If it’s “kids” you don’t want exposed to guns, then don’t expose them to guns. I come to the forums to see what people have made and possibly make them myself or contribute my own project. Until that changes I will continue to visit. I don’t think the forum has to be policed and when the things I am interested in seeing here are gone, I will also be gone.

Not likely, I’ve dealt with people killed in vehicle crashes caused by marijuana smokers. Let’s not start toking up that bush.

Gosh, seems like you may have just found it. I vote for that exact phrase as a first line approach.

See this is the problem everyone is trying to address what about all those killed by drunk drivers? And again we have projects for beer holders.

I am thinking everyone that has suggested sub forums for certain projects would be the way to go. That way everyone can share what they like and others can avoid the section altogether if that is what they wish.

As if there weren’t enough opinions on the topic, I will provide mine.

The purpose of limiting content allowed on the Community Garden is entirely socially driven. Some people will be turned away by the presence of gun-related content. Some people are attracted by gun-related content. Maslow is not here to advance social agendas. As such, it is simply a matter of numbers. Does the presence of gun-related content attract, or offend more people? Are there more people who are in favor of, or opposed to, the presence of gun-related content?

Whatever the decision, however this moves forward, @bar, I support it. Maslow is very useful, regardless of whether or not gun-related content is present.

Here’s an idea; leave it up to the community to regulate.
5) If something is posted that YOU (a community member) think is inappropriate, politely contact the poster directly, outside the public forum, and explain your position. Almost everyone will be respectful to this kind of communication.
6) If and only if a disagreement escalates and cannot be handled one-on-one, a third member can be brought in to regulate. This will be handled on a case-by-case basis; not resulting in site-wide rules.

I would like to apologize to anyone offended by my responses.
I have done wrong!
I took a side and violated my own personal rules of “let it be”, the universe is in balance.
( btw, I’m just a regular user that happened to be the last of the first beta testers).

I’ve reacted with a genetic disorder somehow programmed into mankind.
If you get hurt you have to hurt back.

As a Gemini, I am born with the ability to turn each coin around and look at the other side before I guess its value. (I don’t believe in that stuff, but it serves well as an excuse.)

By no means, I would suggest to exclude weapons enthusiasts from the forum.
I was caught by emotions and I feel sorry for that. Kindly accept my apology.

The success of this amazing community (from my view) is carried by diversity and evolution proves that it’s best way to grow.

There is nothing that would make me more happy, than seeing people building speed loaders work together with those making shelters for homeless. (And groups of Maslowians boarding planes to disaster areas to ease the trauma of kids by building temporary homes, schools, tables and chairs.)

We have lost a former active member to PM’s about imperial vs. metric, can you imagine that?
On my ruler they have lived side by side in peace ever since.
Plus my sled, it cut entirely metric and David’s top mount is imperial. No issues.

I would be more sad to loose feedback of any project built than I am about speed loaders.

A 18+ section sounds great (perhaps just because I want to see the face of the boss confronted with a giant penis or to show off a BDSM stretch bench I might build to ease my disks problems).

@Dag83
If a speed loader makes it to the project of the week I will cancel my membership and contribution.
Censorship was and never should never be a part of this project from where I stand now.
It took me weeks, whiskeys and other toxins to get over this.
MaslowCNC is/was home for me as well.

The good news is that there is an option you that can opt out any time and still update FW/GC via git and still have friends to move on. At one point I actually believed in a “spirit of the project” based more on helping than destruction. I can follow you on going from being a proud member of the community to being just a member.
I have seriously considered of cancelling any contribution due to the tolerance levels I can accept on my side and I have inspected and revised my view. I have strong hopes you can do this as well. Please stay!
My hope is still based on together rather than against. I’m proven to be wrong many times.

So as people add stuff to the community garden do they have a way of making a sub category? Or is this something that we would have to have setup ahead of time? I can understand what is happening here and see it only getting worse as more people get Maslow. The more people that we get involved the more different views and opinions we will have. The hard part is having hundreds of people from all walks of live having the exact same view. This will never happen but even if say out of 500 people 499 could care less and 1 does and is offended. Technically that would be offinsive. I guess Pornography would be a good example you have some that are totally against it some that will watch normal main stream and some that get into far out fetishes. When you go to (whatever.com) You have to then search or select a sub category to decide what you would like to see.

I have read these comments and reread…and I think the bottom line is, gun topics are a very hard topic to have. There is two side to every discussion and all it does is cause hate on both sides and turns people against each other. Just in reading these post you can see this happening…I don’t like it as I joined this group to learn about CNC and making things. If someone posts something I am not interested in, I just don’t read it, I just move on and let those that are interested in it enjoy it. I feel, that if they want to make it that is up to them, not me. It is not my cup of tea so I move on and don’t worry about it. If this community starts getting into ofter things besides woodworking with the CNC then I feel I am in the wrong place and I better there are others that feel the same way. Let’s not get hung up on what this thing is for but what it is made out of. WOOD, WOOD, WOOD, that is what we are all here for let’s enjoy each other’s knowledge about the things we can make out of wood no matter what it is. If you are not interested in it move on, go to another post. Well, I said my peace and now I am done with this post, thank you and let’s enoy wodworking…

Hey, i’m not leaving over this, my maslow might finally be at the post office  like i said allready, this does not involve me, there is an ocean between me and what i percieve as a problem.

@Panzerman, what do you have against polycarbonate?

Absolutely nothing, I just used wood because that is my material of choice as that is what I use most time and that is what I have seen most often used here. Sorry to exclude any other type materials.:grinning:

I have a lot of things that I will be making and designing. The latter can be considered imitation design. I will be designing things that already exist and mimicking their structure. This is called imitation as far as rules are concerned. We can tweak different things so that we are not infringing on copyrights. The other part off my focus is christmas themed disney cut outs for a display. However, I don’t know if I should post those designs to the garden since they are copying disney drawings. I don’t plan to attempt to profit from any of this. Please let me know.

I would put it this way on a copyright product, if you are making it for yourself, it is not infringement. If you are posting copyright design for others to make for themselves it might be infringement as you are aiding in production even if you are not profiting. Profiting is not the line but often a trigger for legal action.

After many years of support when I started supporting an accounting package I came up with the following.

I’m here to help advice you as a support person. I am not a lawyer and as such I can’t offer any legal advice and if you have a legal question you should seek the professional advice of a lawyer and possibly an accountant.

I think you are fine making fan based novelties for yourself. If you go farther with that it could get sticky. If you are really interested, I had a friend working or Disney IP a decade ago I can look into if they are still there. I looked into IP such as this years ago and found often it’s easy as just asking to get permission and avoid the headaches of IP. Many of the groups I worked with at that time had a basic rule of it’s ok, if you make money you need to report it and we will work out a deal. It’s not always as difficult as it seems. If you were producing a line of princess dresses for children based and named by Disney characters and getting $300 a piece I can say it would get very intense to figure out who gets what.

I want to be clear, I’m giving you an impression based on your post and in no way telling you what you should do. I leave it up to each participant to decide what they post or share.

Thank you

I would add that with many things like the Disney designs there’s a trademark issue as well. The standards for trademark infringement are completely different than copyright infringement. While you might not be making any money at Disney’s expense from your designs, their lawyers might argue that Bar & Hannah are attracting people to the Maslow and therefore making money off of Disney. So I agree with Bee, that you should seek permission before posting those kinds of things.

I’ll add that I’m an engineer. Anyone who takes my ramblings as legal advice deserves what they get.

Disney has a reputation of being extremely aggresve at enforcing copyright
claims, even if the are questionable.

They like to pretend that “fair use” doesn’t exist, and you do need to remember
that fair use is not something that prevents a lawsuit, it’s just one defense
you can raise after you are sued.

While the cost toMaslow if they get involved can be as simple as responding to a
cease nd desist letter and taking things down, it is borderline illegal (I am
not a lawyer, and one would have to be involved), so I would avoid poking the
sleeping bear and suggest notposting direct disney characters.

But please do post animals and cartoon-like characters and object, showing how
you go from a picture/diagram to something you can cut

I will do. I plan on doing a bear bear soon. I actually plan on doing two tools (router bit and marker). I’ll show how to do all of that with my technique.

I’ve contacted Disney Labs in the past about the availability for hobby use about software in one of their research papers. While they didn’t give me the answer I was hoping for (“Here it is!”) I did get a fast and polite response.

I was just in Orlando a few days ago, should have tracked Mickey down and asked him about it. 80F and sunny beats sub freezing and the foot of snow forecast today. This Mooselakian winter is getting a little to long…

Disney is a giant machine to rapidly and painlessly move money from your wallet to theirs
