Proper tool change procedure

Is there a tool change procedure on here anywhere? I couldn’t find any. As in changing bits during a project. Like changing from 1/4 to 1/8th inch bit and zeroing z-axis and then resuming?
TIA

Yes, when a tool change command to some tool other than what’s mounted is
received, there will be a pop-up to tell you to change the tool and hit a button
when it’s completed

Yes, i know that!! :joy: You can’t just put bit in any length though. Unless you don’t want it at same depth as previous bit. Even with zeroing z-axis you can’t get it exact. I used my calipers and got it dead on. But was wondering if there was an easier way!!

And also while i was changing bit, it resumed on its own and i had to pause it manually and go back to last z-axis move as @bar explained in the other post.

Try looking for “auto zero z-axis” or something simlar on the forum, it’s really easy, and makes your workflow that much easier, and more precise.

Also there isn’t a popup, you see it in the scrolling gcode on the right

@Dag83 yeah i know there is no pop up. Lol I’ll look for the auto zero axis. That’s what I’m looking for is an easier way for a tool change and keep the same depth afterwords. I had to measure my previous bit and adjust new bit to that depth. During that time (as i pull router out of sleeve to change bit) the sled started on its path again after about 3 to 4 minutes. Lol I had to manually pause it and back it up to tool change location.

I’ve seen rings that you can fix on the bits so they slide into the collet a measured amount. Can’t find the link in the forum, but hope others will jump in. Sure this is the fastest way changing, to measure all bits and fixate the ring to the needed length.

@Gero Right i know exactly what you’re talking about. The bits that came with my X Carve has them, but some are ay different depths as well. I guess I’d have to adjust then allto same depth before using. But with some being shorter, i don’t think i can.

And as article states it’s only on the 1/8th inch bits. Not on 1/4. But glad you brought that to my attention. Never really knew that’s that it was for! lol like i use 1/4 mostly then come back with small 1/8th to clean up.

@Gero that’s what I’m after i think. I’ll for sure be getting them. Thanks so much, friend!!

I do wonder how ‘round’ they run and if that would affect the router bearing. However we run at lowest rpm, so perhaps not an issue.

Well i just ordered two sets because they only come 1 each in size. So now i have two each. So we will find out soon. Lol

I liked the way those ones pinched instead of running set screw into bit.

Since in this case the use is not a depth stop, but a tool to only set Z0 once I would assume them to be on the shaft. Neither of them I would put on the cutting edge of a bit I care for. The version you found is ways better then the screw on the bit. Seems the seller you found even ships to this remote location. That’s rare. Thanks!

Totally agree @Gero. And thank you for showing me them!! :slightly_smiling_face:

The collars with the tightening screw on them I’ve been leary to use since unless they are counterbalanced they would make your router shake like crazy. I just realized, though, that you can use them to set the depth then take them off once the collet is tight. Also, don’t forget to adjust for different heights in your collet inserts. My 1/4 and 1/8 are different.
