Starting cut from where it stopped when computer died

Is there a way to start a cut from where it stopped. My battery died on my laptop before I realized it. And it wants to start the whole cut over.
And also how to I choose the number of passes it makes on a cut. I am just cutting out words and phrases and it is making anywhere from 6-8 passes on each cut therefore taking forever for 1 project.
