After build & Firmware, had to revert back to get Z motion

Hello all, just want to share my experience building #10670 which I received 3 days ago (4 days order to delivery! and I checked tracking every day :-). During assembly, working with the 100 plus 3mm screws and nuts was really hard on these 61 year old fingers  I can now relate to how my dad always asked me to do the delicate, fine motor skills work. Even so, I found building the Maslow enjoyable, and I was really impressed with the engineering and iterations that had to have been involved to get it to this point. Can’t wait to start using it!

Anyway, after assembly complete (did have to grind about 1-2mm off the linear rods), I was able to connect the Maslow to my local wifi network, and I updated the firmware to v0.81 with ease. I tend to skim software instructions, so I missed that there were two different techniques to update the 3 files, so after 2x failures for the non firmware files, I paid closer attention to the instructions and then correctly uploaded and replaced the index.html.gz and Maslow.yaml using the green “files” icon/button.

Once everything was updated, I next started calibration, but every time I tried to move the Z axis I got an error popup that said Z axis could not be moved that far. I received this for Z+ and Z- buttons. I tried setting Z home and got “Error:9” in the serial messages area. I checked troubleshooting in the forums and found one topic where someone referenced cleaning spaces and empty lines from the Maslow.Yaml file, but I wasn’t willing to edit something I didn’t fully understand yet, so I reverted to the index.html.gz and Maslow.yaml files from version v0.79 and after that I was able to move the Z with no issues at all.

NOTE: I did not revert the firmware, just the Index and yaml files.

I haven’t gone back and re-uploaded/tested v0.81 yet as I haven’t started calibration, but when I do, I will share my results.

That is great feedback! We just changed how the “Distance to move” is set and we’ve gotten a good amount of feedback that folks don’t like that the distance is now shared between XY and Z so we’ll probably split those back out into two different distances again soon.

What you want to do is to click here and change this 100 to something smaller like 5 and then the z-axis will move.

Ah, makes total sense now.
