My total weight with sled, router and bricks is ~ 16kg. That is to heavy for the motor shield and power supply on long therm. If you plan to stay heavy I suggest to look into the motorshield http://maslowcommunitygarden.org/TLE5206-PowerControl-Boards.html and replace the power supply with something like this 12V/10A 12V 10A

The typical frame [angle] is 10 - 15 degrees upto 17.

The best angle has not yet been determined.

There is no ‘ideal’ distance. The more you can keep the chains from being near vertical the better, this translates to the wider the better.

As you get wider, it gets harder to put the sled up to the same height between them (the angle gets shallower and so more tension is needed), so adding height to the motors may help (the shallower the angle, the more cutting error is caused by a slight error in chain length)

We’re outside my expertise here. @Gero, I know you built an 11-footer, did you use the stock chain, or did you have to extend it? What’s the limit before you need to add chain?

I guess it is 9.891732 foot. There is not much chain left with my setup. I did not add any to the stock chain first batch.

I will stay near a ratio 2x1 / 8x4 /2440x1220 for my new frame. I will try 3100mmx1550mm.

Yes, I have lots of trouble with my over 1 year old setup. I have huge humidity and temperature differences and my old frame is useless now. I will build the next out of aluminium. Time is money and I don’t have both at the moment, so I’ll have to weight. I will also build a new lighter sled with a spindle at the same time.
Edit: My accuracy April 2017 was 1/10mm in the center of the sheet and +/- 4mm at the corners and top.

There isn’t an optimum ratio, the accuracy depends on the chain angles involved,
the closer the chains get to horizontal or vertical, the more the machine
struggles.

We have not narrowed it down to the point.
We know to wide and to low is not optimal. We know to high and to narrow is not optimal.
We have a good math, estimating most variables like chain length (sag), sled weight and so on.
For the math we have with the hardware we have, I believe there is a optimal ratio.
I’m not an engineer to prove it in paper, so I would need to prove it by building the adjustable frame and do a series of test by changing the hardware variables in steps.
