My wife wanted a kitchen helper so our kids can (pretend to) help out in the kitchen. Designed it for a 4’x4’ half inch plywood sheet. I think I’ll increase the thickness to 3/4" and re-cut, but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
This is awesome!
Which parts do you think are calling for 3/4? Is it just the steps or would it all benefit from thicker wood?
I think the whole thing would benefit from the added thickness. At .5", it just feels a bit flimsy overall. Given that my kids will be climbing up and down on it and moving around a lot, I’ll feel more comfortable with the thicker product. I was also having issues with screwing into pieces like the steps and platform. It’s too thin to use something like threaded inserts and wood screws into the end grain just tries to tear through the plywood layers.
I actually decided to switch to MDF instead of plywood, as well. I made a rough cut last night with a 1/4" downcut and plan to do a finishing cut with an 1/8" bit. The rough cut looks beautiful.
Seeing this design reminded me of one done during the original Maslow days. Just in case anyone wants to see a different take on the problem, here’s that one: Kitchen Helper Design

Right you are. One of the cats must have stepped on my keyboard while I was composing my email because the link was unexpectedly altered. I have edited the link so it should work now.
