Completely New to this... Smoked The Bit... HELP!

I’ve only done this once because stopping the Maslow mid job has always required taking it off the frame and putting it back on every time I’ve tried, and I don’t want to wait potentially 2+ hours for it to finish each ‘ghost cut’.

Would be cool if this was actually viable to do before each cut without having to reseat the assembly, though.

I thought that would be enough until I tried to do 2 cuts in a row and it plunged through my cut piece, spoil board, and mounting surface, right away for the second cut that had the same max depth.

It should have retracted the bit, then started cutting, but it just started from the descended location.

Will be setting z home before every cut from here on out.

Hello,
Stupid question maybe, but what kind of bit are you using? Is it one that is supposed to be able to plunge down like that? Or does it need to go down gently while going sideways…
Regular wood router bits often can only go sideways.
