Having trouble after calibration

Hello, I seem to be having trouble setting things up…
The calibration seems to work and asks for a restart. It never does very many waypoints though, certainly not 3x3 then 5x5 then 9x9, regardless how I fill in the settings in “Config” or even leave them blank.
After restart after calibration I learned from the forum that you have to retract all belts again (so first get them of the frame) and then extend and this time instead of “calibrate” use “apply tension” So far every thing seems to work as planned.
Then I tried moving around with the x and y in the which sort of works, it does not always get the direction right away and the tension in the belts gets lost very quickly. Is this normal? After one calibration moving around even made the tension go very high and I had to stop the whole thing for fear of it tearing itself apart. I think that time I had only calibrated a 1000x1000 square and tried how far to the left it would let me go with the x/y moves and what would happen. It didn’t look good to me and I did the whole calibration process again. I tried 2000x1000 area, I tried 3x3, and 5x5 and 9x9 settings in the Config before calibrating. Nothing seems to work properly and each time I have to retract and extend all belts twice to get thru the calibration and the restart with applying tension which is and enormous hassle. I must be doing something wrong…
Can somebody help me? Does this sound familiar to anybody? And what is the solution? Or is this all normal and I should try a g-code…
I am using the latest firmware (v0.71).

That does not sound normal; after a “good” calibration, it should move around with all the belts snug if not tight. If you can try another calibration of at least 1000x1000 and when its done copy the text in the serial output text area and post it, that may help us see what might be happening.

what firmware version are you running? the calibration has changed significantly
over time.

The current full release is 0.71 (0.72 will be released 5/8)

@dlang I am running 0.71. in all my attempts. Maybe my “frame” which is my shed wasn’t stable enough or square enough.
I made new anchor point measurements and it turned out not to be as square as I hoped, so I improved that. It is now square almost to the mm.
I have tried again as @ronlawrence3 asked me to.

The errors in the beginning might have been from waiting too long. I repaired the non squareness after I restarted the Maslow to do the calibration but before the actual calibration. So this time it was calibrated mith better (squarer) anchor points. I just let the Maslow sit there while I was doing it.

You MUST restart your machine for them to take effect…I know that is annoying, it’s getting fixed ASAP.

I think this is the highest fitness number I have reached so far. I have only turn the Maslow off now, I have not restarted it yet. I thought I’d wait for your reactions first. But it might have been better than before, I do not remember the exact fitness numbers but I remember them being under 1 and in later tries maybe 1,1 or1,2 that area, not 1,75 that is the highest so far I think.

This does look good, except it should have started the next “ring” of movement after saving the initial fitness… did you wait a while after seeing this final message or just turn off right away? Also just to make sure, you did install the latest index.html.gz that went along with the firmware, right?

No, I did not use a new index.html.gz since I thought it wouldn’t matter, I thought that was purely cosmetic. I did not wait for very long after the machine stopped doing anything. 1 to 5 minutes I guess in my several tries so far. None of the times did it continue anything… And the last sentence in the message said I had to restart the machine, so I did do that.

So I should install the latest Index file too? I have only updated the firmware file and the maslow.yaml file. I will install all anew and try again and post the message and after calibration I will just keep waiting to see if other things happen.

Yes, you should always install firmware.bin as upload firmware, and index.html.gz as a file, ESPECIALLY for calibration. All the calibration computations are in the html file. the maslow just sends measurements to the ui and it does the calculations and tells maslow what to do.

Just tried it out, was much much better.
This time it did calibrate again after calculating, and again after that.
It didn’t have much confidence in the results though so it warned me not to use them.
I tried to make my set up a little more stable and perhaps this time, since it seems to be going ok now, I will run it without the blanket I had under it for protection. Maybe that was too soft to give stable results.
Anyway thanks a lot for now I will run it again until I get better results and then I will try the xy panel to see if it works better.
In the last of the calibration runs the slack was much less so I think it is going the right way.
Will let you know if/when it works :slight_smile:

Worked better again, calibrated twice. While calibrating it spits out less changing numbers as if there is less to compensate for / the accuracy is getting there? Just my feeling about it.
Went better but still when i move around with the x/y the belts have much slack and I am worried to use it like that when cutting with the router on…

Anyway, enough for today, thank you all, especially @ronlawrence3 and @dlang.
More tomorrow, maybe I’ll try a small cut and see how it goes.

That error 82 is new to me. It supposedly means that fluidNC failed to create a file: Alarm and Error Codes | Wiki.js

It might be worth double checking that the computed values were saved into your settings properly

Where do I check those? Do you mean in the Setup Config ? And there the frame size? What exactly do I check?

download the maslow.yaml file from the fluidnc tab/files and have a look inside. it should reflect the latest numbers in your output.

Does this look good or not? This is after my last calibration attempt, which the machine thinks was ok, but @bar saw the unfamiliar error82… The values in the beginning 3088 and 2691 are the measurements I put in, not measured by the Maslow.

What I’m looking at are the values for Maslow_xxx in your maslow.yaml file. According to the final output in your log it looks like the final ones were not saved.

You can either run another calibration and hopefully it will save them or change the values by uploading a new yaml file with the values set to what they are in the output above or enter the important ones in the webui.

The values that the calibration sets are:

Maslow_brX
Maslow_tlX
Maslow_tlY
Maslow_trX
Maslow_trY

so by one of those ways, you can set these to be what you have in the final output of your log above, and then you can try jogging around

Thanks I will try rewriting the file, should be faster than calibrating again (and probably failing again)

I tried rewriting the file, it seemed to work better then before but there was still not very much/no tension on the belts while jogging around. More tension then before though.
So I tried calibrating again. Again the error:82.
After that I copied the serial message textbox and then tried to download the maslow.yaml file form the machine like before to see what the values where this time.
It wouldn’t let me, I mean when (after the calibration) i tried to look at the files on the machine memory the file list was empty, waiting didn’t help. Restarted the machine. Then it would show me the files but the size of the yaml had changed to 5k (the original was 3k) and when i download it to look at it it comes out 0.5k and has the following text when i open it:

And the “click here” part is blue as if it refers to a website.

Did the Error:82 wipe the file and it it therefor redirecting me to a new file online?

I edited the yaml file in Textedit on my mac (old OSX though) is that okay? Should i work it as regular text or as rich text?
