How to update firmware from a mac

I managed to brick my controller last time i tried to update

I know how to remove files (index, yamel ect) and how to upload new files

I am using a mac (someone said to zip the files if I’m using a mac… this probably caused the issue last time)

anyway how many files should I remove

and should I zip any files(or unzip them)

cheers

Hi Byron
You don’t need to remove any files, they are overwritten.
From the firmware resources page get download firmware.bin and index.html.gz
The Mac will want to unpack the index.html.gz file, you don’t want that. This file needs to be in the format index.html.gz when you upload it to the Maslow. I don’t know how you stop it uncompressing automatically on a Mac, check the web.
Releases · MaslowCNC/Maslow_4
From FluidNC pulldown go to Manage Local Files (green button) and upload the index.html.gz file (follow the prompts)
When it completes, close window and click on Upload Firmware file (Orange button)
The latest versions have an additional Green button, “Check for updates and load automatically”. You can try that first if it is available.
Occasionally you may have to load a new maslow.yaml file. Make sure you save it prior to updating.

hmmm

the downloaded file is called index.html.gz (so maybe its still compressed..?)

i left clicked on the git hub page link and got this

I also left clicked on the file

and got the option to compress it

(Mind you, I did this last time and bricked my board.)

On the Mac you need to right click the file, so it downloads without uncompressing it. The Maslow needs a compressed file so it will fit in the allocated space. I don’t have a Mac, but looking at the Updating System, now index.html.gz above describes the procedure you need to follow for the Mac.
As I understand it, it doesn’t compress it properly if you uncompress and then recompress.

I’m on Mac too

You shouldn’t need to remove any old files, just uploading the new ones will replace them

I just left click on the “index.html.gz” and “firmware.bin” files here and they download correctly for me. No need to zip anything.

The only tricky bit is to watch out for ending up with “firmware.bin(1)” instead if there is already a copy in the downloads folder

when i right click index.html.gz

this pops up

I cant see anything that looks like “download linked file as is”

however when I download it, (left clicking it) the file name stays the same"index.html.gz"

so I figure this file (index.html.gz) is the compressed file that is needed to be uploaded

(even though I can still compress it)

If it’s got the extension gz and you have not compressed it, it should be good to go.

alright I’m confident on uploading the “index.html.gz” however do I also upload the “firmware.bin”?

as there’s currently no “frimware.bin” file on there

Firmware you do from the yellow manual firmware update button. If you are just getting started maybe also upload a clean new yaml file so the format is right for the new version

Sorry I don’t have a screenshot

This is the yellow button that you want for the firmware.

This page might be helpful: Quick Start Guide | Maslow 4 Documentation

I used to do some sort of uploading a file on this page

the “upload files” button dosen’t work

and I dont know how to chose a file

also the trash button dosen’t work either (I made a folder??? and can’t delete it)

ian/woodchuck said, update the yaml and the index.html.gz before I do that new yellow button option

I am not as knowledgeable as others on the software side but you are on the right page and trying the right thing. If the upload files isn’t working and you aren’t getting a dialogue file finder then something is stuck.

While restarting everything and unplugging replugging the machine I had to clear my browsers cache (delete browsing data) for this page Maslow.Local ( most browsers let you delete the stored data just for a page ) I also had some luck opening the page on a different browser or on my phone to unstick things. This is basically the same thing.

Might be worth a try.

One thing we have seen on older versions is that if you are in the captive
portal version of the browser, some things don’t work. what is the URL on the
browser line? if it’s not the ip or name of the maslow, connect via IP/name and
try again.
