For the retract all it would not let me click it until I clicked stop to put it in an alarm state. Then the retract as as follows.

The pull tight number indicates that we’ve lost 6mm of length on that arm somehow and the only way to lose length is either in full rotations (44mm) if we’re not reading from the encoder for a full rotation or for the magnet to slip in the roller. I think that magnet needs to be re-glued. We’re getting rotation of the magnet that is different from the length of the belt.

I think something like a small 4x4 could be enough to then let you drive around
(even if the belt tension is not correct) to map the corners.

I think something like a large 4x4 (out near the corners of the workspace) would
be a good, quick way to check if the prior calibration info is still correct and
can be re-used.

I know this shouldn’t be the case with the encoders, but is there a possibility
that the belt being wound with different tension before the calibration than
after you move around and it fully extends then retracts could cause grief?

without the full extend/retract, the belt may end up rubbing against the idler
gear, throwing off calibration force measurements.

The machine was powered on all night and still lost 2mm after hitting retract all this morning. I’ll have to pull it apart to see what’s going on.

Wait so you extended the belts, did nothing else, and retracted the belts in the morning and it was off by 2mm? Wild! This is a tricky one.

If we do an extend and then retract right away with no long wait between them what do we get? I’m curious if time is really the factor.

EDIT: Could extending all 4 belts at the same time be an issue? I’ve been pulling all 4 to be more time efficient.

Could the M4 be dropping encoder pulses?

If you could select how many belts were extended and retracted, you could extend and retract one belt, which should have no offset between extension and retraction, then repeat it with two belt extending and retracting simultaneously, then three, then four.

I don’t think that could cause any issue, but it’s worth trying :upside_down_face:

The extend followed by the 1mm difference on one arm seems like a slight concern. It might be worth doing a couple cycles of Extend All (fully) → Retract All to make sure that we’re getting close to zeros on all of them.

Not really, we have an absolute position encoder that we talk with over I2C so we’re reading the magnets angle from 0-360 degrees so to lose position we have to lose a full rotation (or multiples of full rotations). It would be possible to have a bug in the code for how the position is computed for sure and we shouldn’t rule that out.

This is an interesting idea. We don’t have to extend all four, we can just pull one or two out and then retract them and see if that has any issue. I wouldn’t expect it to, but if it did have an impact it would tell us something important.

I didn’t realize- that certainly decreases both the chance and potential impact of communication issues within the system.

I should also add that I thought that I had this exact issue in the past and spent a long time trying to figure out how that was possible only to discover that my magnets were slipping. The encoder tracks magnets angle, not the rollers angle so if the magnet moves in the roller the results will be off.

Originally I used some press fit in magnets, but I added the glue because of that issue.

So having the magnet slip is an issue that I’ve seen before.

Let’s also not rule out bugs tho. Someone reported a loss of position when using the pause button (which also shouldn’t be possible) so I’m going to investigate that today and maybe learn something

I think that the next steps are either to plug those values in and see if we can move the machine around using the arrow buttons, or to run calibration again and see that we get the same numbers.

Either one of those would be a good check that things are working the way that we expect them too I think.

So I did try jogging the machine around to all 4 corners and it seemed to keep the belts tight. I wouldn’t say the same exact tightness, but probably good enough.

I did try running the test.nc file and it did not do what was expected. It essentially went diagonal up (X+Y+).

I ended up pulling the power. Here is the console output.

So then I re-looked at the gcode. I hadn’t selected “disabled” for coolant which puts a M7 in. I know my Shapeoko has issues with that, but just halts if encountered not continues on.

So the first thing to note here. I zeroed Z and the retract height + clearance height works out to 0.6" or 15.24mm. At the end Maslow reported 45.00mm as the Z value, which shouldn’t exceed 15.24mm.

Second thing of note. The stop button did not stop the machine I hit stop multiple times on the first run and it didn’t stop moving till I pulled the plug.

I don’t think these feeds and speeds are too fast, maybe they are? I’d call this really conservative compared to my Shapeoko 3.

I wouldn’t expect this to cause any issues, but maybe…certainly not the catastrophic issue that you saw

I was actually just looking at this too at the exact same time. Someone reported an issue with the pause button and so I was trying to figure out that. As far as I can tell the pause button is working, but pressing pause and then stop is causing FluidNC to restart. I don’t think that is the issue that you saw, but it’s worth mentioning.

Yeah, I would consider those pretty conservative too.

Do you have a copy of the gcode file? I can try running it to see if that is the culprit in some way, but I wouldn’t expect it to be.
