It seems like you are trying all the right things. To eliminate the chance of a hardware problem, can I send you another Arduino?
I too had problems with uploading to the Arduino. Been using them for years but the clone that came with the kit refused to cooperate so I tried a genuine Arduino mega I had and it loaded up 1st try. Jon
