Needed a desk for WFH
Made a mistake on the Meticulous Z-Axis cut but was able to salvage the logo.
love this! nice work!
This looks really good. What bit did you use to get the corners so sharp?
I’ve been finding that V-tip bits work really well. Part of that crispness comes from the software though. V-carve and others like it add in moves in the corners to take full advantage of the fine point on the bit and it mostly eliminates corner radii.
Estlcam, Carbide Create (now 96x96 workspaces), and Kiri:Moto do v carving, estlcam did quite a nice job with it in the couple projects I’ve tried (well, it couldn’t handle raster to vector of old chip carvings, but they were full of unclosed curves and overlapping lines). It will also let you keep text or designs proud and v carve around then, a neat trick. Easel does v carving too, but only on “free” days or if you cough up a payment.
Little off topic, but estlcam was great for finding unclosed paths, highlights them in a different color in one of the automatic wizards.
For the engraving I used the smallest bit I had which was a 1/8 upcut because I didn’t have the V-cut that @MeticulousMaynard recommends (and I’m impatient).
I’ve since found and ordered a 1/4 skank 20° V-Carve bit and I’m looking forward to giving that a try.
One more thing, since the 1/8th left some material behind I used a dremel to clean it up.
Might consider a 60* bit, or a 60/90 double ender. I tried a 60/90 Yonico bit which I would not recommend, worked great for a short time until one edge chipped. Admittedly that was on a bamboo flooring sample coated with aluminum oxide, but my 60* whiteside handled. You may find that 20* too steep, will want to cut much deeper than a higher angle bit.
This is v carving on a very tiny 3018 router, with a 2500mmpm Z, not a Maslow. My carpenter says my new Maslow shop (aka finished out room in the barn) should be done in less than a month so the Maslow can be resurrected and finished. Swamprats allowing, of course, need to find them a suitable offering. I know they eat maslow idlers, but spit them back a month later, open to suggestions.
Haven’t posted any of my work yet. Started using the Maslow maybe 6 months ago. Got it as part of a combo deal with the makers 300 3D printer. Use the hell outa the printer lol. Anyways here are some of my projects.
Nice dust deputy holder, always afraid I’ll knock mine over and break it
That stain look amazing! Any secrets you can share on how to got the coat to look so shiny and smooth?
This is probably my 4th successful cut on this machine and I decided to play around with the Slicer program from Fusion 360. The workflow was fusion -> slicer -> autocad -> fusion. Not very efficient, but good results in the end.
Upgrading to the Meticulous Maslow was such a success, I wish I would have upgraded sooner!
Yeah so the stain was applied then I did laquer for the finish. I use an hvlp sprayer and I think that was approx 5 coats with light sanding in between. If it’s furniture that isn’t going to be touched and used a lot i use lacquer. It’s easy to apply a lot of coats in a short amount of time because it dries quickly. What sucks is having to make a paint booth every time I do it. I’m still trying to figure out how to quickly set one up when I want to spray. If the furniture is going to be used a lot then I brush polyurethane. Its a long drawn out process to get it right but leaves an excellent durable finish. Here is a workbench I just built a couple months ago in my garage. Walnut stain, poly top. Not sure why all of my phone pictures are flipping sideways. Sorry about that.
Thanks. The bucket actually sits in a tight hole so it’s not going anywhere. It keeps the bucket In place so the hoses don’t knock the assembly over.
Nice workbench @Tordren, keep it up
Buddy wanted a K State Power cat to make a wall project with. I don’t do nearly as fancy things as I see on here but after a year with my Maslow I’m getting more and more comfortable!
What’s Meticulous Maslow?
It’s an upgrade to the z-axis. My Maslow was previously modified and failed at properly changing cutting heights, which prompted me to find the forum channel above. It solved my cutting height issue (allowing for more complex cuts), drastically improved the dust collection and reduced the friction of dragging across the surface to lessen any unwanted pivoting.
Thank you sir
Tried engraving for the first time today. My 4 yr old is really into My Little Pony and has been talking about these gems for the last 2 weeks, so I decided to make some.
I’m going to let her paint them, so I tested out watercolors and it works surprisingly well.
